Safety Recall 22S27 Rear Axle Bolt Fractures

I'm wondering if the shearing of the bolts, and the bearing failures are interconnected. The 2 bolt rear ends might have enough resistance during the seizing to not shear, but with half the strength, the 1 bolts shear when the rear end fails/seizes. So the root cause may be the differential/rear end, and the symptom is the sheared bolt.

Depends on what one means by "major issues" vs. maybe "an ongoing problem."

My definition of "major issues" would mean every dealer in the nation having dozens of Explorers with broken bolts/bushings/bearings on their lot.

Regardless of how we feel about the issue, that is just not the case. I got the AWR brace because I had the FP tune installed.

I would consider myself having to replace a differential every 4th oil change, more than a minor issue. I would also say that the Sheriff having a dozen failures in their fleet, more than a minor issue. There were 4 Explorers at my small dealership waiting on rear ends.

That seems a bit more major than a camera issue, but they recalled for that..

Do you have the single bolt subframe in your ST?
Gave him a call and he liked me as a plaintiff for this case. He said he was going to tell his team about me and see if they wanted to add me.

I would point to the lack of hundreds of other people reporting large numbers of Explorers on dealer lots awaiting rear ends, as indicative of something less than a major issue. I would ask where is the outpoor of complaints by LEO's complaining of same. If I am going to believe such a thing, I need to see widespread evidence.

I don't think it's widespread but more of a small percentage of vehicles. I doubt the bolt breaks much on the police vehicles as they have the less powerful motor/hybrid system.

Broke my bolt n they never put the auto parking brake software in while it was in for the repairs. Said it didn't need it because everything was replaced. Sounded a little odd not to put it in after the bolt just broke but what do I know lol

The police vehicles do have the same ST 3.0TT engine as an available option and at least one police force is having enough problems that they decided to install braces, rather than waiting on Ford.

True. It seems most agencies don't order the 3.0L Interceptors.

Unless it was replaced with a 4 bolt, I don't see how they can say you don't need the software.

The police vehicles do have the same ST 3.0TT engine as an available option and at least one police force is having enough problems that they decided to install braces ...
The 3.0L is "available", but it seems few (if any) departments are ordering them.

And seeing how there's 12,000 local police departments in the US, where are all the other vids/concerns/complaints about bolt sheers? I'm not seeing it.

I'm sure some smaller agencies do get the 3.0L TT but most do not.

What did your recall entail?

I have an appointment to take mine in next week for a few issues. I was originally taking it in to have the window switches replaced because of the peeling chrome (I think there is a recall for this as well, but he said they'd just cover it under warranty), and also the keypad on the door for the locks doesn't work half of the time. While I was on the phone, he said something about replacing my subframe bolt, so I asked more about it and he wasn't very specific. I know I have the 1 bolt subframe, but as far as I know my bolt is OK. I don't want them to change it just because, I want them to fix it properly.

On top of this subframe issue, the camera issue is another problem and they don't even have a fix for that yet. My service guy told me that the "fix" they had for that made things worse if anything, so they have stopped installing the "update" for that issue until Ford releases the "fix" for it.

After reading through this thread now, I'm not sure what my recall fix will entail as it relates to the subframe issue. I told the guy if they're just going to take the bolt out, and then put a new bolt of the exact same quality in, why bother? It seems Ford isn't going to install the proper subframe, so I'm curious to see how this plays out. I will post next week after I get the car back about what they ended up doing. I plan to ask them more info on the subframe issue and see what their response is.

My Vin # Fell off all the Recall sites after this was completed and the ford site no longer list vin as a Customer Dissatifaction repair for 150,000 miles

The only open recall is the camera, I haven't craweled under either to look at the number of bolts as of yet.

I was told that the bolt is an upgrade after I had my diff fixed. Not sure it's really an upgrade but it can't hurt for them to replace it. It could be bent and you have no idea.

Completely true. I think I even saw a post saying that happened to them not knowing until Ford swapped it. Either way its a good idea to let them do it. Just hoping the other issues on this get sorted out because all things considered, this thing is a blast to drive.

I can tell you that 3 days after a complete repair and replacement that my new upgraded bolt was already bent. Was told the new bolt was actually an upgrade over the previous bolt.

I hadn't launched it hard or drove too aggressive. A few quick accelerations in the 3 days but nothing that any vehicle shouldn't be able to handle with ease.

Only reason I found out was mechanic that was installing my ID Speed dif brace loosened the dif bolt a little and noticed it was bent. He let me know so I could bring it back to Ford.

They ordered another bolt and replaced it once it came in.
