10r60 fluid level

I just did a drain and fill with a new filter. Ford recommends the fluid level be between 4.5 - 3 on the dipstick. But I know folks on this forum have said it should be at about 2.5.

Before I drained it, i checked the fluid level at 97C and it was at a 2 with the rear end slightly lower than the front end (Last serviced 30k miles ago by ford dealership). My garage is only a 1 degree slope and I didn’t feel it was worth the trouble trying to get it perfect. 200 miles After my service, my dip stick is reading about 1.8 at 100C with the car on the exact same slope.

Am I over thinking this or should I drain like 1/4 to 1/2 quart? Car drives great,

I live in colorado and I hardly ever drive on a flat road.

It should be 3-3.5, should be no lower then 3. Just checked mine today because it’s shifting weird again, and mines at 2.5. Once I fill it back to 3 it’ll be better.

2.5 on the dipstick is more fluid than 3. 3.5 is lower than 3. I think you are confused

Guess I’ll update for other people wondering, i left my fluid level where I had it about 1.8 and it’s been driving great. Downshifts as so much smoother and more predictable after drain and fill. Checked the fluid again after a few hundred miles and looks clean and red no bubbles i could see

I am confused, I was literally looking at a pic of the dipstick as I was writing this too. Dummy me. Meant “It should be 3-2.5, should be no lower then 3. Just checked mine today because it’s shifting weird again, and mines at 3.5. Once I fill it back to 3 it’ll be better.”

The 6R80 in my 2010 EX had the same issue, it was a quart low and acting weird. I bought a universal dipstick from LMR and put it on and now I can check the fluid level under the hood like it should be.



After I paid 70 bucks for it, I found it on Amazon between 38 and 50 for the exact same thing and amazon says it will fit the 6R60/6R80, and the 10R60/10R80. I'm about to order a generic one from amazon and try it. If it fits, I'll buy another for the mustang which has the 10R80

I don’t see any way the dipstick will snake down to the 10r60 plug location. There’s basically enough clearance for 2 fingers around it and above it is the floor pan. I would save yourself the trouble and look under there first.
I circled the spot there. You can see floorpan directly above it.

Yeah, I had fun trying to check mine without a lift or ramps. Burnt the heck out of myself before figuring out how to contort my hand correctly to unscrew it since a wrench would literally take forever to loosen it.

Yea that’s actually the most annoying thing why do they need so many threads LOL. I used harbor freight kevlar gloves worked amazing

I have a set of old school stick welding gloves I used on the 6R80. Its easy to get to, but the cat is right there.
