I got the regular ST shocks. There was no noticeable difference in the ride quality. My shocks were not leaking but thought at 50k miles it was time to swap them due to the shitty roads here in Houston.

I guess it depends on whether you are noticing leakage on the shocks, excessive rear bouncing, tire cupping, it might be time to swap them. For me it was such an easy job and cheap to do, why not. I've always heard that they should be changed at 40-50k intervals.

I would definitely replace them. Especially the rears... so easy to replace and no alignment needed. I really like the PIU's... both struts and shocks. The OE struts/shocks get very soft with age.

Someone sent brand new ST and PIU shocks and struts to a shock dyno to answer that question once and for all. Results aren’t back yet.

You can definitely do just the rears and get benefit... especially with that many miles. Easy DIY.

At this price I just ordered a set of rears even though I have an extended warranty. I’m coming up on 40k and getting some very low speed noises in rear and was going to take it in. After the $100 deductible and dealing with multiple trips to the dealer to get it fixed it wasn’t worth it. They arrive Friday and I may throw them on this weekend. I really hate others working on my vehicles. Got the warranty more for all the $300-$500 electronic components throughout modern cars.

Exactly right. I have replaced plenty that would have been a warranty repair because I don't want to do the warranty dance. It's a lot of wasted time and any time the dealer does something, there is a good chance they will mess something else up.

Ford dealer already folded my pinch welds on warranty work. Not once, twice!

I also have carbon fiber skirts and they run next to the pinch welds. I have a set of magnetic pinch weld mounts with blocks for my quickjack. I always bring them now and always talk to the mechanic before he lifts it. I also buy him lunch.

The dealer noted that my rear shocks are seaping (11.5k miles on the clock) but won't replace them because of the Steeda springs (which have been on less than a year and 2k miles). The only thing I have been able to find online is some replacements by Steeda (upgrade for regular explorers to match the ST), or direct replacements from RockAuto (clickable). Are there any better options out there that I am missing?

I know this is a late post but.. I had Steeda springs on a 2020 ST, and the factory rear shocks wouldn't handle them. I blew both rears out going over a lip in the road. I talked to Steed about it, and they said the stock shocks are weak. The replacements they sell are indeed Ford, but they gut them and put in stiffer and higher quality guts in them. Just ordered their springs and the shocks for my 2023 ST. Cheers

Uggh. The Steeda shocks ARE ST shocks--but with a markup. Look at their description closely. They even state you will get ST performance... because that's all they are.

This is untrue. They are off-the-shelf Motorcraft ST shocks. Nothing more.
