We bought a new 2026 without the glass roof. We didn't want any glass, retractable shade or anything other than a plain steel roof.
We had a 2016 explorer Sport with the sunroof... what a nightmare. It leaked with no warning, shorted out the switch that activate the sunroof, then backed up so much water that it soaked the carpets and caused mold. The worst part, couldn't open the sunroof to access the drains easily. Ended up having to remove the headliner and get creative in order to clean out the drain lines.
For a feature that we used maybe 10 times in 10 years, the sunroof was just an added expense and pain in the ass... both at point of purchase and over the life of the vehicle.
I'm only speculating, as I haven't seen overall weight comparisons.... but I'd guess that the current model with the non-retractable panoramic glss roof probably weighs more than a standard metal roof. Not a huge deal on an SUV, but for those of us that are more performance oriented, I'd prefer less weight.
