Catch Can Worth It?

Hello All,

I’m interested in understanding whether there’s any benefit to installing a PCV catch can without simultaneously addressing the EGR system. From what I’ve learned, the EGR system can also contribute to intake valve deposits over time, potentially causing similar issues.
Any insights would be greatly appreciated. If there’s an existing discussion or resource on this topic, please point me in that direction.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! There’s definitely a benefit to installing a catch can, the EGR system really isn’t the main contributor to deposits, and it isn’t a problem so long you’re keeping up on normal mantnance and using Top Tier fuel.

Based on the junk I dump out of my catch can, for me, yes it is worth it.

I installed the J&L and plan to check it around the 3k-mile mark — really curious to see what it’s catching. For what it’s worth, I only run Shell or Chevron 93 octane and stick to 5k-mile OCIs.

Thank you for the info.
I always use top tier fuel and 91 octane (high altitude).

I get about a teaspoon of oil at 3k miles.

On a direct injected engine without additional port injection my opinion is yes. Heck, even with port you could argue, even without the worry of the back of valve cleanliness, you could gain from a cleaner intake air quality,

I've had a J&L on mine for about 12K miles now.

Haven't really seen a lot of junk. I check every ~2-3K miles and get a teaspoon of clean oil out of it. I know i might see some condensation in the winter, but I really haven't.
