On the 6R80 in my 2010, I was a quart low and it still came out when I pulled the cap. I had to put it back, clean up the mess and then pull it with it running.

How did some of you break loose the transmission cap? Did any of you have to take heatshields off or something? I can get a wrench on it but not enough leverage. This is my first time trying to get the cap off. Thank goodness for Kevlar gloves lol
It’s definitely on there. I have a long wrench I just ran over the top of the exhaust and over to the tranny, and tugged pretty hard and it loosened.

Thankfully the dealership topped it off before i bought it so it has been cracked open already. I broke it loose pretty easy with the car cold. It doesn’t need to be very tight, just 30ft lbs. no need to remove anything. And in case you are wondering, with the cap and dipstick out i was able to drive it up and down ramps (under all 4 wheels) In the garage without any mess.
What ramps do you use? I’ve always thought about getting a set of 4 ramps but been iffy about it. How much extra clearance you get? Gotta be better than nothing.

They are rhyno ramps from oreilly’s. The clearance was really good. I put the ramps behind the wheels and reversed up. It felt very sketchy but in reality i dont think it is. Levels the car great. I should add the transmission was fully warmed up when i drove it with the cap off. The level would be very high when the engine is off and cold

that’s the clearance when on 4 ramps. It is really easy to work under there. i reverse up because the ramp would have been in the way of where I needed to be to get the trans plug out. I set the ramps up on a rug i use in the garage the first time and the second time i did it right on the concrete. I put the intelligent awd screen up on the dash so I can make sure power is going to all 4 wheels. Eco mode would probably help you creep up the ramp smoother but i used sport mode both times I think. I use left foot on brake and right foot on gas and i keep the brake pressed a bit to try to smooth out the transitions. I might just be overthinking it but if you’re considering it i would say do it. And since the ramps stack, having 4 ramps takes up no extra room compared to 2 ramps

Yeah I gotta figure something out with the initial plug torqued to 1000 lbs hahaha. I can’t get that damn thing off. I got no room for leverage.

No, mine was definitely on there. Had to literally push on the tire with my foot and pull the wrench to get it to finally loosen the first time.

I got the trans up to temp and got a level at 4. Should I add a half quart? View attachment 31657

How did you verify the trans temp? If you used a scan tool and read 195+f then yes,
Definitely add more. But it took me almost 20 whole minutes of decently spirited driving to get it up to 195f. Start with half quart and check again. Up to the 2.5 mark is preferred. Also your fluid looks brown like mine did before the change. You should consider dropping the pan and putting a fresh filter in. Attached a pic of my fluid after the change. Looks a lot more clean

Yes my accessport gives a trans temp reading. I spent over twenty minutes driving. I’m at 55k now and will probably drop the pan at 60k or so.
Thanks

Finally got that little bastard (plug) off. Best way was by using the 2 wrench method. Piece of cake

If you want to heat up the trans fluid quickly, this is what I do. Mine goes on a quickjack and I’m too lazy to drop it and drive around. Parking brake on. Start engine, put it in drive with foot firmly on brake pedal. Raise rpm to about 1800 and keep it there for 5-10 min max. It should be up to temp. I have a temp gauge and it came up pretty quickly. Can’t recall if it was more than 5 min. Also wondering if you can use tow/haul mode to see the trans temp. It won’t have numbers but I would guess a middle rating on the gauge would be good.
