What is the APIM and can it be upgraded?

Hi guys! I'm new here and just got a 2020 Explorer ST. I love it. I've been browsing the threads and it appears you can update the APIM so that we could "possibly" get Sync 4? Am I understanding that correctly or is it wishful thinking?
