I'm looking into getting a cold air kit for the ST and I keep hearing from all the Mfg'er that one of the drawbacks of the stock air box are the ribs inside the box....

Got me thinking.. wat If you just ground down or minimized the ribs to clean up the air flow....You'd still have the limitations of the OEM air filter..(or are there more fee flowing filters out there K&N maybe?)

But better flow is netter flow.. right?

Yes and no, An engine can only use what it can use. Just because more air is available doesn't mean the engine will use it. In stock form, the amount of available air is more than the engine can use. There is plenty of headroom. You simply can't feed it more than it can eat. Now, if it's a built engine (larger turbos), things change and an engine may use more air. Cutting the fins out while running an engine in stock form is an exercise in futility.

Intakes don’t help power, the stock intake outflows the stock turbos. So what you’re thinking of doing will do nothing. The stock intake is technically a CAI too.

ZFG told me with my tune and existing upgrades that there is power to be had with an intake when running in the DMS "Race Mode" aka "Sport Mode". Not sure how much nor do i have testing to prove, just passing info that was told to me. I'm sure any gains in this situation are probably not worth the $$ for the CAI in terms of ROI, but hey it all adds up I guess.

That being said it was my last upgrade and least priority. I just did it more for the looks cool factor and maybe will help add a bit in the DMS tune sport mode. I wouldn't recommend an intake based on my experience unless you want turbo noises then maybe the fenfab kit.

If you’re pushing the stock turbos on a race tune on E50 there are small gains to be had, but they’re pretty small. For most applications intakes don’t help power though.
