ST Headliner repair/ replacement

Local tire shop swapped my wheels from summer to winter and stuffed one of the wheels upright in my trunk causing a tear in the headliner.

A new OEM replacement costs $4400 installed by dealer. This is a one piece part so the fabric is already attached to the foam and just needs to be fastened into the car. Unfortunately it is backordered with no ETA.

However, the tire shop that is responsible, is pushing me towards a "repair". A call to a local auto upholstery shop tells me that a repair consists of dropping the headliner, ripping the fabric off, filling the gouge in the foam and then glueing a new piece of fabric on and finally reinstalling it.

I'm not sure I'm really open to that. It will no longer be a factory headliner at that point and how would it look and hold up? Will it start sagging in 2 years?

What would you expect if it was your car? It's a 21 ST with 50k miles.

I would force them for a full replacement. That process to repair it doesn’t seem like it would ever look right.

^^^ What he said. The age and mileage have nothing to do with it. You should expect your vehicle to be as it was when they took it in for service.

Sorry to hear that, I would recommend the full replacement. Maybe the upholstery shop could do a nice job but my experience working with re-glueing auto fabric it tend to fail pretty quickly. I noticed you mentioned the mileage and year, I am assuming you thought about trading it? If you like the 21 ST I would just keep it and get it fixed. I like my 2020 ST and don’t plan on selling it, probably going to be my last car. If it was my situation I would work on replacing it. Just my opinion.
