Hello Guys,
Im pretty much interesed in tune my Explorer ST 2025 however I live in Mexico in which actually we do have bad fuel qualitity "the best fuel is between 90 to 91 octanes!" We do not have more than 91 octanes.... Based on this I do see that the best tunes in USA are the ZFG, GOOSTUNE OR LIVERNOISE.. all of them have great power gains starting on 93 octanes! Therefore my main constraint is , I can use a tune for 93 octanes using 91 octanes instead? Despite that the engine will not deliver the 100% of power is there a potential risk of knock or possible damage in my computed / engine?

Hopefully someone can provide me clarity on this so I can choose the best tune according to the fuel that we do have in Mexico!

Thanks!!

ALl the tuners offer 91 specific tunes, you definetly wouldn’t want to put 91 octane in with a 93 tune. Just specify what octane you plan to use and they’ll tune you for that.

Yes, but I mean if I would pick the most powerful map then I would need to choose the 93 ... what could happen if I choose the 91 octane tune and I add VP or additive to increase octanes up to 98? Tune can not run well? I used to run 1/4 mile one a month here thats why I want the most powerfull tune in which I can add some additives whenever I go to the raceway.

Don’t. Cause if you forget to add additives then you’ll be running 91 on a 93 tune which wouldn’t be great. 91 is plenty powerful and you won’t have to worry about additives or the cost and effort associated with it.

The other doubt that I have is ZFG has different applications , Race, perfomance, daily diver etc.. My logic says that I should choose the race one but to be honest dont know if this tune can works me also for daily driving and traveling in highway with the family. Whats your thought in regards these options?

Race tune is great. Drives really well even in day to day applications.

I have 134K miles on ZFG race tunes…91, 93 and E50. The car drives flawlessly. Rolled 139K this morning.

Hello Guys,

Thanks!!
The tuner will make adjustments to your tune with the fuel you have available. @GooseTuned did a great job getting my 2025 to behave on terrible 91 also known as ACN or Arizona, California, Nevada fuel which is sourced from California. California mandates a certain refinement which runs more like 89 from what I gather.

I’m doing a road trip in June that will take me through all those states. I’m leaving my 93 tune in and taking a case of Boostane. lol

Quick question, how does altitude affect the required octane for a tune? Living in Mexico, I'm guessing OP is at high elevation. Back when the wife was still alive we went on road trips to New Mexico often, and since the state's average elevation is almost 6,000ft, we never saw gas above 91 octane.

Someone with more knowledge can correct me but I believe high elevation will slow the combustion requiring less octane. You will see 85 in Denver for example. Where this is irrelevant is when you add forced induction, the air density is then increased requiring a higher octane to prevent pre-ignition. So even with high elevation, a higher octane will be required for best results on a forced inducted vehicle.

Living in an area with horrible 91oct my whole life, and having the experience to tune that fuel over the past 15yrs gives us a massive advantage over most. Tuning on good 91, and 93+ feels like a cheat code.

Sub-par fuel and the Ecoboosts don't go well together, and when people don't have the experience tuning those fuels it ends up in a less than ideal situation. I've retuned a lot of 91 cars for that reason.

If you're looking for someone with that experience, I'm happy to help if you need it. I tune Ecoboosts for a living, have owned 20+ (currently have 7 for R&D) and drive them everyday.

So your tune seems that can perfom well with the bad quality of the 91 oct in Mexico bro? This is my main concern , the poor fuel quality that we do have in Mexico. Have you ever tune an Ecoboost based on Mexico remotely?

Like TNT said, it needs to be a specific tune for your fuel there. 91ACN will probably get you close.

I've tuned a TON (probably 500+) of cars and trucks from MX, the fuel is definitely bad. They used to cross the border and meet me in El Paso when I was tuning in person. I would do 5 a week at least. For years.

What is your goal tuning your car? You definitely won't be at 100% normal 91/93 potential, but I want to make sure I can meet your goals. Your car will likely only make 30-40hp (safely) over stock on that fuel. If you can add Boostane, then we can make more, but you'd have to run boostane to do so

Terrible is an understatement. The OAR avgs for me around -.7 on 91 but can randomly go to +.08 I usually add 2 gallons of E85 which puts its at -.90/-1. ACN just has horrible fuel. Running Gearhead tune but might be moving to ZFG
