I think it’s just something in the ear of the beholder where they may want to perceive exhaust noise as resonance.

A statement like “little to zero drone” covers the vendors tail.

How's it sound going at highway speed. Any noticeable drone in the going steady 70-80MPH? I do way too much highway driving lol, so debating on the 3" or 2.5" kit.

edit - Quick discussion with Victor @ Thermal, he said he believes that there is actually less drone with this system if any compared to the 2.5". And almost every review of the 2.5" says no drone. Needless to say, just put in my pre-order in with Whoosh! Can't wait.

So how is the 3" system as far as drone? Is it zero drone like the 2.5" system even at highway speeds? I'm about to order the thermal system but am trying to decide on the 2.5" or the 3". I definitely don't want any drone at highway speeds as I'm on the highway a lot.

Even on they highway in 9th/10th gear when the engine is lugging a little without downshifting like a long gentle hill climb? I’m debating between the 2.5 vs 3.0 and we spend a lot of time going up to the mountains in NC, TN etc and am worried about drone going up elevation.

I've been running the 3" system for ~9 months and ~4K miles, so I guess I can drop a review now.

I'll preface this with this: I might have a defective system, I think it has an internal rattle on decel ~1900 RPM. It's very repeatable. It didn't bug me enough to try to diagnose it outside in Michigan winter, but it is something I'll tackle soon. I need to double check all the clamps, make sure nothing is hitting, maybe tap it in a few places, and probably take some videos before contacting them. It has a lifetime warranty, so this will be a good customer service test. Whether this has any impact on drone or sound quality, I have no idea.

I'll also say: exhaust is subjective. What one person likes, another might hate. Here's my background: Mid 40's, married with 2 kids, the ST is my daily driver and the family hauler. I'm also a car guy with a few project cars: 2001 Supercharged M5, 1970 Chevy C10, my wife drives a Golf R (which is why the ST is the family hauler)

My overall review: I love it and hate it.

Pros:
1. It sounds fantastic. I get compliments everywhere I go. I find myself using the remote start to start it just so I can hear it fire up from outside the car.
2. Installation was really easy.

Cons:
1. The exhaust tips stick out too far. Because the larger outside diameter part is so short, I have this funny gap between the tip and the bumper. They're pushed in as far as they'll go. I'll have to cut at least an inch off somewhere, maybe two, to get it to tuck in.
2. It's borderline too loud (for me) in some situations (Awful sound insulation in the ST doesn't help)
Steady state cruising at 45mph: "braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"
Steady state cruising at 70mph: "braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

You will hear it ALL THE TIME. It's not overbearing or anything, but it's there. Music drowns it out easily, I was expecting my wife to say something, but she's probably used to me having cars with loud exhausts.

Drone:
By definition (a low continuous noise that does not change its note), it drones. I experienced exhaust drone (drone with vibration/resonation) once: Six people in the car, kids in the very back, cruise control set to 40mph and going up a slight incline. Enough to drop the RPM but not downshift. My son loudly said "What is happening to my ears right now?!", followed up with: "Oh yeah, daddy's exhaust"

Does the internal rattle have a hand in that? I don't know but possibly, it's right in the RPM range for it.

Loaded car on the highway and going uphill without a downshift, the exhaust note will deepen, but no resonation.

tldr: 20 year old Me would love this system. Mid-40s family man Me wishes he got the 2.5" system.

Thanks for the info! I'm still undecided as to which system to get. I love the start up and rev sound of the 3" but I'm worried about highway cruising. Don't get me wrong, I have a magnaflow system on my 95 tbird and love it and it's loud, but I don't take it on the highway much. Also these systems aren't cheap so I want to be sure before I buy one. I'm actually in the process of returning the magnaflow system I bought before finding out about the bad drone on the highway. So yeah, I want to be sure lol

I just installed my Thermal kit from a MBRP setup and I love it. No drone, great sound, quality product!
Did you install the 2.5" or 3"? If it was the 3", how is it at highway speed, any drone or too loud?

it’s pretty quiet on the highway unless you’re getting on it. I suppose you could make it drone under certain circumstances if you try, but in real world daily usage, it’s not an issue at all.

I have the 2.5 inch system and just added CV Fabrication downpipes. Sounds great! Now I just have to figure out how to turn off this stupid FENG sound from the speakers.

I just ordered the 2.5" system and can't wait to get it! I agree on the FENG, if you figure it out, let me know how you did it lol

I have the exact same setup and absolutely love it! It’s even better with the FENG turned off too
