This sounds similar to what my ST did early on. It ended up being the throttle body.

Dealer replaced ours about two years ago and it is still in good shape. Same design as the original. If you look at later model years, Ford did away with the front trim panel so that there is no longer pressure being put on the panel, which causes it to break when getting in and out of the vehicle.
