Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

That motor would have been ideal. I'd settle for an RS model with that motor and 500 to 550hp too. I will say, the 3.5 EB in my parents explorer sport was unsatisfying. The 3.0L is much better than that, but the 10 speed certainly helps. The RWD drive train helps a boatload too.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

Wasnt that the gen1 3.5? The gen2 is supposedly much improved. They push 450hp in the limited f150 and a couple other variants. My parents had a previous gen explorer sport. It was underwhelming. It was tiny inside for how big it was inside. This gen explorer blows that one away.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

I'm definitely not bashing the ST.. It's a great chassis, and an overall great package. It's such a great chassis that it deserves more. That's my point basically.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

A Ford price point and a Porsche price point are VERY non comparable. They're more expensive not because of performance, but because of details, engineering, and branding. A lot of branding actually, because it's the same as the Audi Q5 that's a whole bunch cheaper. It would not have cost them...

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

Like I said before, a $70k Explorer RS would be fine for me, if it had the 10r80, 550 to 600hp, and was sportier. Frankly, it should have had the 10r80 in the first place to help with towing. The hybrids got it, the ST should have as well. An SRT Durango is an option, but I'd hopefully just go...

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

No kidding. We got lucky that it was only 3 hours away. There were a few local that just didn't really work for me, but we found our 4x4 stealth at a dealer that includes a lifetime powertrain warranty, so very lucky indeed.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

I wish the ST was even sportier. 450hp, a little lower and more aggressive, monoblocks brakes... Maybe I wasn't clear. We bought the expedition for my wife, but we considered buying the ST for me. We needed a 3 row of some sort and either of us could have upgraded, but I like fast cars, my wife...

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

Totally agree. The expedition with the stealth package just looks nicer, it's IMO no sportier. At least not enough to even use the word sporty, lol. This car was for the wife though, so she doesn't care about that. For me.... I wish they'd gone a little bit more crazy.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

I mean, if that's how you feel, that's on you. I can assure you, the ST is better than most cars I've owner, we just decided more space would be better for a family hauler. The point I was making is more like a few areas for Ford to improve.

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

I agree, they definitely nailed it for their price point. That said, I think I would have paid 2 to 5k more for 50 more hp, a stouter trans that towed 6500ish pounds, and more quality all around. I still think the ST is a great package, and honestly, it'd be a great companion to our expedition...

Why we didn't buy an Explorer ST, and other various thoughts

We recently decided against an Explorer ST and instead purchased an Expedition Limited with the Stealth Package. I figured I'd leave my thoughts about the Explorer here, as we were torn between the two, but opted for Expedition largely due to the larger size for our family. Explorer Pros...

    Valvetronic Exhaust

You could make something work with 6th gen camaro dual mode mufflers, but a cutout would probably work better.

    What are you guys towing?

Dou you see high trans temperatures when towing? Anyone added a trucool or similar trans cooler?

    ST Line?

I think the GCL is a bit bigger. Honestly, it's tough to tell, when we looked at it it was getting dark out and it seemed to be about the same size, if a little lower to the ground (it had air suspension in park mode). Seeing them out on the road, they looks bigger. The wife thinks the explorer...

    Rear end damage

You're kidding right? BMWs are known for serious engineering faults. HPFPs were the bane of BMW in the mid 00s. They have dealt with cracking subframes, relentless rod bearing issues, a whole boatload of issues with their mini coopers, just to name a few. Personally I'd much rather not oay...

    ST Line?

AWD is a must, it will sometimes get used to pull our boat. Very rarely, but want the option open. It's not a cost issue, more a "she won't care and extra 3mpg issue". That and the st line interior looks better to me with normal gauges, red stitching, and Alcantara inserts. That said, with the...

Selling my 22 ST allocation when it arrives

There's going to be so many people who never financially recover from mistakes like this it's not even funny.

    ST Line?

It would make sense that the 2.3L would be tuned to hold higher gears more for fuel economy. My wife isn't the sort to kick down a gear to pass people, she's more the type to say "I can sit behind this person" or go around them maintaining her speed. That said, before we bought her rogue we...

    ST Line?

Short version, wife's car, she doesn't care about power or anything. 2.3L better fuel economy, 8k cheaper, better looking interior, but no coold seats or massage seats (she doesn't care about those). ST pros, POWARRR, 300 extra pounds towing, a few nice bits like turn signals in the mirrors...

    Reconsidering Explorer ST

That's lame. Cost cutting at its finest. That's probably why the aviator towed more... It probably had the 10r80.
