Well, to be fair, it's appropriate build quality for a $33k vehicle. It only hits $50+ because of the options and powertrain. If you are one that likes a smooth, cushy ride, the ST ride quality is not that--which is one reason, it's the only mainstream 3rd row SUV that I really like.

Whatever you are modifying, you really have to be prepared to pay for repairs for that aspect of the car--whether it's from your mod or just a fluke. Otherwise, don't do it.

That's a huge difference. Maybe ask if you can borrow it for a weekend? I would even pay rental car fees to thoroughly examine it.

I don't think they overlooked ST. In our Explorers, they made the changes that everyone wanted except maybe a lowered suspension or variable shocks. They were rewarded with 20% of Explorer sales going to STs. That's a hell of a lot!!
