My wife is coming from a 2019 Expedition Platinum. It was such a nice truck. Road like a freaking dream. I know we are talking two totally different vehicles but the Expedition was SO MUCH QUIETER!!! We really love the Explorer, but would like to try to quietude cabin down. Do you think taking it to a car audio shop and having a dynamite style sound deadener applied would make a big difference?

I probably should have googled first!!

Installing Dynamat in a vehicle typically reduces cabin road noise by an average of
3 to 6 decibels (dB) for partial, strategic coverage, and up to 9 to 18 dB for full-coverage, comprehensive installations. A reduction of 3 dB is generally considered the threshold for a noticeable difference in sound, while a 10 dB reduction is perceived by the human ear as halving the loudness.

Average Results by Application
  • Partial/Targeted Coverage (e.g., just doors): 3-6 dB reduction.
  • Full Vehicle Treatment (Doors, Floor, Roof): 9-18 dB reduction.
  • Specific Test Case: A 2003 Crew Cab with a diesel engine showed a 12.7 dB reduction in road noise after a full, professional install.
Seems pretty substantial!!

It made a significant improvement in my 22. I was doing a stereo upgrade so I did the floor, doors, and rear lift gate. If you pay somebody it’s not going to be cheap. I pulled all seats and trim panels out to do it.

I did it to one of my Mustangs and it was an extensive project. I had the interior out, so everything was done. Firewall, floor and trans tunnel, roof, all doors, trunk, etc.

Did it make a difference? Yes it did. Do i have measureable data? No, but i can tell you with the windows up and AC off the exhaust not is much more subdued as well as road noise.

Would I do it to my explorer? No. If you have to pay someone to do it it's going to be expensive.

Proper sound treatments will absolutely make the car quieter.
Well I agree with this, but most audio shops don’t do proper treatments which is why I said it would be a waste of money.
