I've seen the "new tips" mentioned at a couple vendors but why exactly is the difference?

Try sending an email to Thermal with that picture. They should be able to answer that.

Just comparing to the 2.5 tips. If roughly the same key dimensions then may want to adapt them to my 2.5 inch system.
