Damm, I already got another call out! I don’t know about this one though! I said I would race for bragging rights but not for money. I forget what year he said it is but it’s a Dodge Durango SRT. CAI, meth injection, upgraded fueling system, exhaust and custom tuned on a dyno at a local shop. I did just opt to buy the 93 tune which Adam said will net me about 40 Hp but I don’t think it’s going to matter! It should be a fun night of racing though. I enjoy just watching!

The meth and upgraded fuel means boost. Ask more questions.

If that has the supercharged 6.2L I'd say it isn't even in the same class as the ST. It starts at $80K 700+HP stock. Supercharged, all that displacement , tuned, AND methanol ?

Oh, definitely not in the same class! I don’t think it has the hellcat engine but it is supercharged. The only reason I’m even gonna race is because there’s no money involved! That and it will only be 1/8th mile. I’m not expecting to win but it will be fun and it will be cool to see how I measure up. I hear he runs low 11’s in the 1/4 mile.

I don't think the Durango pictured here is a SRT because it should have 6 piston Brembo front calipers and 4 piston Brembo rear calipers.

No, I found out it is not actually an SRT. It’s still bad-ass tho! He’s done some work to it. It has the 5.7 with a Procharger D1SC supercharger. We were supposed to race but then we got hit with 46” of snow. I haven’t seen or heard from him since. Maybe when the weather gets better.

@BrooseDaMoose : Go get' em!!! Make him run for his life!

Seriously, if you went to a sanctioned track, what kind of handicap, if any, would be involved? CHP out here went with the Durangos this purchase cycle claiming the Durangos have more HP and better performance for their pursuit cars.

That thing is still slower than Christmas. An E50 tune will drive out of his life. I had a fully built 5.7 stroked to a 6.1 with a D1SC and meth…my ST is quicker. IMG_9589.jpeg

That’s encouraging! I’m only running a 93 tune but I should at least keep up if not beat him. Not sure if it’s still going to happen though. Next time I see my neighbor I’ll ask him.

I got to look at his car and talk to him yesterday. He’s done a lot of work! He said the motor is stroked the same as yours with high compression pistons, hardened rods, aluminum port and polished heads (I forget what he said about the specs), an aftermarket intake manifold that’s also port and polished, upgraded fuel system, the supercharger and meth injection. The transmission is rebuilt bulletproof with a transbrake. He said he runs in the mid to low 11’s on slicks! My car isn’t that fast! Of course he could be just bullshitting to scare me. We’ll find out next weekend; if it doesn’t rain again.

I half expected someone else to beat me to it but the new July/August issue of Car & Driver cover story is a comparison of eight three-row SUV's including an Explorer ST 4WD. The test pool included the following; Honda Pilot Elite, Hyundai Palisade Hybrid Calligraphy AWD, Kia Telluride SX-Prestige Hybrid, Mazda CX-90 Turbo S Premium Plus, Nissan Pathfinder Platinum AWD, Toyota Grand highlander Platinum Hybrid Max, and Volkswagen Atlas SEL R-Line.

The Telluride wound up ranked first (not really a surprise, C&D loves this thing) and the Pathfinder was dead last. The last such SUV showdown the magazine did was in 2019 with the Explorer finishing 4 out of 5 so Ford did better coming in #3 this time around.

The reviewers stated the ST was the quickest of the bunch hitting 0-60 in 4.9 seconds and a full second ahead of the rest of the pack in the quarter mile. There biggest complaint was the seats of which they said the driver's was "too hard, too narrow, and too flat". They also felt considering the sporting nature of the ST that it was "shameful" that the Hyundai and Kia both had better side bolstering that cinch in Sport mode. I personally think the seats are very comfortable, much more than my prior 2019 Mazda CX-9, but that's me.

I was surprised in the little summaries accompanying each vehicles photos that for the ST under Highs it said "Powerful and silly" and the Verdict was "A 400-hp breath of fresh air that is exactly as impractical as you think it is". Wow, that is a pretty harsh judgement coming from a magazine supposedly written by and for car enthusiasts. I've been a Car & Driver subscriber since about 1972 and it's hard for me to believe these guys are complaining about more horsepower being impractical when every issue has raves about some 1000+ hp supercar that costs over $300K. What happened to the guys like Brock Yates who got arrested racing the Cannonball Run? Anyway, for those curious or cross shopping for a new SUV you might want to give it a look.

That's embarrassing but also indicative of the times, people are more worried about if their car will keep their coffee warm, without spilling it, while they sit in a chair built like a tempur-pedic vs. actually enoying driving the car. I would expect more from an enthusiast mag though. There's nothing "Silly" about power in a vehicle, and I've never once felt the ST was impractical. It does exactly everything I want from it. 0-60 in under 5 seconds while looking nice, getting me to work everyday, and hauling my dogs around with plenty of room.

I agree, I think the ST does a nice job of living up to the 'Sport' part of the the SUV concept without compromising the 'Utility' piece of the equation. How the C&D team felt it was "impractical" eludes me, the ST even gets better mileage than my old CX-9 4 cylinder. I had a new Telluride a couple months ago as a rental and honestly it didn't impress me much. The interior looked more upscale than the Explorer but it was a dog performance wise and the handling and braking definitely were more soccer mom friendly. I was happy to turn it in and get back in the ST when I got home.
