Trailer Brake Controller Plug Location, and Redarc Install

This was very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to write it up. I almost pulled the trigger on the same controller and was going to mount the knob exactly like you did. I decided to go with the more basic Curt TriFlex and just used doublesided tape to mount it to the lower dash. The...

    Intelligent Access Door Handles

Hook your battery to a battery charger and try it. Or just get a new battery. If you are on the original battery its at the end of it's life anyway. A weak battery can cause some weird problems. When I bought my ST the driver and driver side rear doors would not unlock by touch. I found...

    RWD or AWD??

Does the RWD ST have the same 3-bolt rear diff issue as the AWD? Seems like sending all the torque to the rear would just make a bad situation even worse.

    Mods for towing ?

I have a CVF IC that I have not installed yet. I also do some towing and hope that this will keep inlet temps a little cooler down here in hot central Texas. I can't comment yet on how much, if any, it will help. A trailer brake controller should probably be on your list. The ST tows pretty...

    Transmission

Pretty sure the recommended trans fluid is likely synthetic. I would not put anything in my transmission except the Ford recommended fluid. PERIOD. Fluid is going to influence performance and wear in a very sophisticated transmission. I'm sure there are alternatives that list the same...

    Non-convex right side mirror?

I pull a trailer often with my ST. I hate the convex right-side mirror. It's pretty useless for backing a trailer. Has anyone heard of a plain flat mirror option for the explorer that can be swapped in?

    Wind/rattling sound near B Pillar

The plastic retainer is threaded but I think I had to sort of pry and twist them to get them off. The post is threaded and an M6 nut will thread onto the post.

Considering Trading My F150 For An ST

I had my '13 Explorer Sport for 10 years and used it like a truck. I thought about replacing it with an F150 but with the super short beds on trucks these days I think the explorer actually has better utility that the pickup. I have a 12' utility trailer that I use a lot for towing things too...

    Great MPG's

Did my first road trip in the ST this weekend. 400 miles on one tank through central and East Texas. I ran Eco mode the entire time. Stopped to refill and trip computer showed 25.2 mpg. My calculated number was 24.3 mpg. Pretty hilly terrain with sustained speeds between 65-80mph. Pretty...

    Rear LSD swap

There's a discussion about using the timberline or mustang LSD here. https://www.explorerst.org/threads/explorer-st-timberline-part-swap.2948/

    Wind/rattling sound near B Pillar

Just fixed this myself after chasing the high speed fluttering noise. Some 1" fender washer on top of a M6 nut to replace the plastic retainer will fix it. I'm in Texas so I just used regular steel washers. Being in snow and salt country I would recommend you use stainless hardware. Ford...

    Full-length Cargo Mat?

Yeah, 94lbs and they are 3/4" thick. I've been using the mat that goes behind the third row to lay across the second row seats when they are down but I would like to have a better solution. I've got some concepts but haven't bought or started fabricating anything yet.

    Leaking oil?

Let us know what you find. I have an occasional burned oil smell that I'm hunting as well.

    AUTO OCTANE DAILY/TOWING TUNE

That's what I have too. Have not installed it yet.

    AUTO OCTANE DAILY/TOWING TUNE

I don't see how just normal towing is anymore stress on the trans than brake-boosted launches and full-throttle 1/4 mile blasts. You guys towing boats, I assume you have upgraded intercooler with your tune?

    AUTO OCTANE DAILY/TOWING TUNE

I would like to hear some opinions on this myself. I assume that the issue with towing is heat. I tow with my ST a lot. I'm upgrading the intercooler for that reason. No definite plans to tune it yet but I may in the future. I would think that a tune with upgraded IC would be OK for towing...

    2023 ST noise

I should have added that the fluttering from the underbody panel was only at highway speeds. I didn't ever hear it below about 50mph or so.

    Full-length Cargo Mat?

I do a lot of hauling in my ST and the second and third row seats remain down most of the time. Is anyone aware of a cargo mat that covers both the second and third row seat sections? I've seen plenty that cover just the third row and back but none that cover the entire Explorer cargo area.

    2023 ST noise

Can't tell from your description exactly what your noise sounds like. You said it sounds like it's inside so maybe a different problem than mine. Anyway, I had a fluttering noise from the rear drivers door or rear quarter panel area that I was chasing. Turns out it was the underbody felt...

    Howdy from austin

Hill Country ST here. I've been considering putting some sound barrier in the doors. What did you use? How much did it cut down on road noise?
