What Have You Done To Your Explorer ST Today

Let mine sit while I ran errands in the Mustang. Too bad it's too hot for top-down.

    Best Fuel?

Mine's on its second tank of Costco 87. No difference noticed until I had to lean on it more than usual. Not quite as peppy, but the cost-per-mile is certainly better lately.

    Premium gasoline

Physics and drag coefficients haven't changed. https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-power-required-to-keep-Prius-rolling-at-60MPH-on-level-road

    Premium gasoline

The Prius needs only nine horsepower to maintain 60 mph. The article I read many decades ago said it takes 16 HP to maintain 60 mph and that was on a full-size sedan (a yacht in today's size classification). It stands to reason if the motor can produce enough horsepower at 10% vs.13%, it'll use...

    ST vs Aviator for towing

Get an after-market rear sway bar. Steeda's is nice. Also check your state's regulations for trailer brakes. Florida requires them above 3,500# trailer weight. Texas may be similar. 5,000 # is pretty close to the maximum for the ST. Have you towed a trailer before? If not; practice, practice...

    Owners manual question.

Mine had no book. Had to filch the one from the Limited I was trading. The cargo net was still in the plastic wrapper.

    NYC ST owners check in!!

My wife's from a small town near Binghamton. We were just up there for her class reunion, then she and our daughter went right back for a family reunion. Long drives.

    Real world mpg

GPS is accurate to 10', the gadget checks in several times per minute. Why would I suspect it to be less accurate than the car? 2,600 miles of interstate qualifies as straight and level and good satellite coverage.

I use my Garmin to test the odometer and speedometer.

I hear ya, but I sure like 'em. My Mustang has the ultimate sun roof.

    Real world mpg

I don't think I've ever had a vehicle where the speedometer and odometer had the same error. My ST's speedometer is as accurate as could be expected, but the odometer is 2.3% low. I don't recall if I checked the Limited. The Escape needed 1.8% added to the odometer reading to get accurate...

    Real world mpg

No, federal law allows a 5% speedometer error. I don't recall if it's plus or minus or total and I don't know if odometers are held to a specific range. A long time ago, manufacturers had the odometer read a bit high, so if Joe Consumer traded when it got to 60,000, it may only have 57,200. The...

    Real world mpg

The readout is as much as 15% optimistic. I've determined what my odometer error is and I compensate when entering the data in Fuelly. I've dialed back the readout to be more accurate. If you really care, fill it, drive it, fill it and do the math. A radical change in mileage can indicate...

    NYC ST owners check in!!

Ouch! I wouldn't want to expose mine to that traffic. Arlington, VA's traffic was bad enough.
