UPDATE: I finally was able to get somewhere on this. They were able to confirm that my vehicle was updated the last time it was in and Ford has agreed to replace the transmission under the powertrain warranty. They are also throwing in a free oil change for my troubles.

UPDATE: I'm back to square one! I heard back from the service manager today and he had some bad news. He told me they got the transmission out and found that a vent tube was melted from the cat of the aftermarket exhaust. He said this may have caused the transmission to overheat and fail! He said he had to report it to Ford and now they want pictures. I can't believe they are giving me such a hard time with this! They've had my vehicle for 9 weeks now! I reached out to a guy I was refered to who was a Ford service tech for over 30 years and now owns his own shop and he quoted me $5,900 to replace the transmission! That's a new vin matched transmission, a new cooler (which he said should be replaced) and the labor. The service manager told me that his cost for a new transmission was $7-8K! That's BS! I even sent him the link to the new transmission which was only $2,500 but he said "You can't believe everything you see on the internet". I wish I had heard about this guy before they pulled the transmission. Now I'm stuck! Even if I took the vehicle to this other guy I would have to pay the labor for them pulling the transmission! The car gods are pissed at me for some reason. I'm kind of thinking I should have gone with the Durango! :(

What type of Warrantee did the downpipe installers give you? Seems like it's their fault.

Sounds like your dealer doesn't want this covered under warranty!!

Yeah that’s pretty lame imo. But at least I know to watch the vent tube whenever I get around to installing my DPs

They wouldn’t warranty that. It might be their fault but it might not be.

They have been dicks since the first day I walked in! I should have just gone somewhere else but the next dealership is like 45 minutes away and I don’t know if I would get any better service! I just found out about a guy near me who worked for Ford for 30 years and has his own shop now; he quoted me $5,900 out the door! That’s a new transmission, new cooler and labor. I wish I knew him before this all started! What are you gonna do. I know where I’m taking it from now on!

How about get it towed to the 5900 shop and pay the jerk his labor for pulling it.

This is why I really don't want to introduce aftermarket parts during the warranty period. You give excuses for some of these dealership clowns not to perform and cover work under the original factory warranty.

I’ve never understood why shops don’t want to do warranty work? Don’t they get paid the same no matter if it’s coming from ford or the customer? Like why even make an issue out of it. Stick it to the MAN and not the little guy. Maybe there is a good answer to this that I’m just unaware of. ‍♂️

I think the warranty labor rate from Ford is a fixed price and is lower than typical shop rates. They can always find shortcuts to make money on the labor if their mechanics are any good.

I finally ended up calling Ford about this. Within an hour I got a call from the Operations Manager who told me they had orered a new transmission and were just waiting for it to come in. He said they tore the transmission down and the clutches were destroyed. I told him how I had just had the transmision service before the problem started and the tech probably didn't fill it to the correct level. It's a common issue. Of course he didn't feel that could happen in his shop. But end story, they are replacing the transmission and covering it under warranty. I should have called Ford a long time ago! The only thing is, the guy I talked to who said he could replace the transmission for $5,900 said the transmission cooler should be replaced as well but they are not replacing it. Should I push for this or is it really not an issue? Why would it need to be replaced?

Because if trash gets in the cooler lines, from your toasted trans, it will end up in your cooler. Replace your transmission and the trash gets back into the new trans. At a minimum, get your cooler and lines flushed, it was a simple procedure on my Suburban and can't see how the Explorer is any different.I believe it's less than $200 for the cooler, just make sure they flush the lines with cleaner.

Ditto on flushing the lines and cooler or replace the cooler. Nothing like passing fresh trash to your new transmission. Possibly some small metal bits in there too.

I’ll take that up with them tomorrow! If they won’t cover it I’ll pay for it myself!

When I worked for a local Ford dealer every transmission replacement required a cooler back flush, didn't matter if it was warranty or customer pay. And we had to document the flow rates and if they weren't in spec the cooler was replaced. It seems to depend on the dealer you're visiting.

I spoke with him about it and was told the same thing. He said it’s part of the procedure. I want to look at the manual but haven’t had the chance to yet. I can’t imagine they would be so stupid as to skip it after having to replace the transmission but with this dealership I can’t be so sure!

Well, I can finally put this to bed. I got my vehicle back today! I got a little suprise when I walked in though. The service manager, the operations manager and some other upper managment guy were all there waiting for me. The service manager told me my vehicle was all done and Ford covered everything except for a melted transmission vent tube (which they blamed on the downpipe) BUT, and there was an errie pause, he said, "we know you are tuning your car but Ford was unable to prove it"! That is what took so much time. Then the operations manager spoke up and said "we see this all the time with these high performance vehicles. Had the guys at Ford been able to prove your computer had been tampered with, you would have been on the hook for around $12-13K and your extended warranty would have become null and void." Of course I still denied it to the end. If I had to pay for it then so be it. You accept that as soon as you load that tune in the vehicle. I was prepared to fork out the $5,900 to this other guy to get it fixed. At least it's done, so far there are no issues and I have somewhere else to take it if I have an issue in the future.
