It'd be nice if people in FORD's service dept knew a little bit more about FORD Performance.

Talk to the Ford Accessories Department (If your dealer has one).

Since Steeda is selling the "FP Tune" and they are in the high performance business you may want to reach out to them, they are very knowledgeable and great to do business with....

I haven't decided to get the FP tune yet, but when I do I'll keep them in mind.

Does anyone know how the Ford warranty works?
Do you still keep the Powertrain 5YR/60,000 Miles?

Chatted with Ford Performance. The Powertrain warranty is 3YR/36,000 miles.

Steeda offer free shipping and no tax.

  • 3-year/36k mile warranty when installed by Ford dealers or ASE/Red Seal certified technician

From what I understand, any warranty work would first be presented through Ford. If Ford denies the claim because they determine a failure was a result of the tune, it passes to FP's warranty. The FP warranty is 3/36, as you stated.

Anything over 3/36 could be denied by Ford, and would not be covered by FP.

That being said, there doesn't seem to be an outcry from other Ford platforms with FP tunes over warranty claim issues.

Thank you! I have been hoping someone would chime in on this.

I didn’t realize explorers came with a 5 year warranty. I wonder how often they deny claims in years 4 or 5 on a Ford tuned car or if they're more lenient.

That probably depends more on your service department than anything else. I believe there is at least one person on this forum that had an entire transmission replaced under warranty even after installing a 3rd party tune.

I suspect Ford is fairly confident that this mild tune won't do any damage to the drivetrain. Otherwise either Ford or FP would or could be paying out significant warranty claims for an $800 product. Doesn’t make sense.

So if I understand correctly ...

Someone doesn't actually "lose" FORD's 5/60 Powertrain Warranty with their FP tune, but in the event FORD denies a warranty claim based on the FP tune, then the FP warranty kicks in.

But the question is: if that occurred would FORD's 5/60 warranty be voided completely? Or is it just in that one instance for that one problem the customer had?

The FP warranty, however it complements the original Ford warranty, is from the new vehicle in-service date. For those of us with ‘20’s that are coming up on three years old (or plenty with over 36K), it really will make no difference. That being said, it’s still a great way to go if you want your ST to get a boost in performance without worrying about any potential damage to the drivetrain. For those of us that couldn’t care less about racing, it’s nice to see this out finally.

Warranties aren't ever wholesale voided (I'm sure someone will come behind me and give a one-off, 3rd hand story about a warranty being voided), basically they (FORD) can make the claim that your aftermarket part or modification is what caused the issue and that one issue simply won't be covered under warranty. Installing 3" drop springs on your explorer isn't going to "void the warranty" on your engine or anything in the interior. The only real argument that could be made there is that they wouldn't warranty suspension components because you have lowered the vehicle well beyond it's intended range of use.

Not at all.

Here’s an ‘official’ response from FP:

The FPP 3/36 covers failures *directly* attributed to our parts, for 3/36 from the in-service date of the vehicle. Outside of that period, the factory warranty still applies, however *if* there is a failure that is directly attributed to our parts, then that specific claim could be denied. For example, if you had a water pump seal start leaking, obviously that wasn’t caused by our parts so it would be covered. If there was something along the lines of, say, a piston burned up from going too lean and it was determined that our calibration didn’t provide enough fuel, then the base warranty likely wouldn’t cover it. It’s a case by case basis.

Considering it comes with the warranty. It would be worth it to me. If they just sold the tune separately in future years. Since the tool alone is valued at $495. That way when I sell my 2020 and get a newer model year. I could purchase just the tune for the new model year and use the tool from this tune package purchase. So do they sell just the tune file?

Okay, that response is both comforting and disheartening at the same time.

I know tunes are normally VIN locked, does that mean the ProCal 4 Delivery Tool is as well?

From Ford Performance:

"ProCal Flash Tool Instructions
The tool and performance calibration are locked to your vehicle and therefore cannot be used on a different vehicle."

I was interested, mostly, until I read that it is not available in California. Apparently, another tree will die if we ad performance to our car.
