Turbo Upgrade! Market Research

Who is going to be interested in turbo upgrades? I have a couple of vendors that work closely with and both are looking understand how much interest there is in upgrading turbos.

The cost of the upgrade would likely be $2000-$3000 and will likely net 50-100 hp.

Who would be in for this type of upgrade?

Are these turbo upgrades coming along with upgraded fuel pumps, aftermarket intercooler pipes, manifolds, and exhaust?

The upgrades I have in mind would be Factory location Factory frame turbos.

Of course I would love to do some G Series turbos, but that's a ways out. Just to clear up a couple other things the Nano platform does not actually have exhaust manifolds the turbo was both directly to the heads. So if you wanted to do something like a G Series it would be a pretty simple adapter and then yes you would have to build custom intercooler piping and downpipes.

I have builders that would be willing to take on such projects but I don't for see anybody willing to put up the money yet. This platform is a little bit difficult in the fact that if people are willing to spend that kind of money the upgrade they're probably not going to have an explorer, that's just my thoughts.

Turbos are ready for beta testing! I have 1-2 sets sold already so I should have some more data! These are drop in replacements and should support 80 lbm/min, meaning we could in theory touch 700 whp (if everything else can take it). I expect to be mid 600s for sure on e85. Who else is in?

I'd like to know more but I'm not ready to change out the originals until the warranty is over... I don't actually even know what size the stock turbos are.. By 'drop in', do you mean replacement internals or the entire turbo? Would there be a core charge if just internals? I assume the stock turbos are of the internal wastegate variety?

It's a factory core and upgraded internals, bigger compressor and turbine.

From the outside they look completely factory.

I used a smaller version type of Turbo upgraded on this 2.7l, which as you know is what the 3.0 liter is based off of.




The 3.0l will be bigger, and more similar to a Garrett gtx2860r.

They should be in the 1-200hp range if they produce 20lbm/min more.

Thank you. Those are good numbers. Has anyone noted how hard it is to get to the turbo's as well as remove them.

I don't think it's too bad, but I don't know. These don't have exhaust manifolds, and turbos use oring seals. Those are typically the two worst things about swapping turbos is the both going into the manifold are always corroded and the gaskets are pain in the butt to line up and Ford got rid of both of those things on these.

There are sets that are already completed. If you were to order a set now, it would be about 1-2 weeks depending on cores coming from ford

Best part about stock turbo housings --- Ford techs won't know they're not stock.

So all your warranty worriers should sleep well knowing that.

Here we go guys! Price will be $3795 and they are capable of 80 lbm/min. One of the first that's is already inbound to my customers, so I will have data on them in a few weeks.

Ok great so with the trade in it's about $2800. Not bad at all. As far as timing goes if I have PBD tune my guess is that I would have to work with you guys moving forward since no other vendor will know much about the turbo's and their capabilities correct?

Well.... the core is on top of the 3800....


I have a second option I'm working on that will probably come in a little cheaper.
