That's actually my biggest gripe about turbos though. The high end 80+ punching it, that lag there is so fucking annoying. A supercharged car will get a good distance on you during that lag. A full motor bigass v8 will just leave you there. That can be fixed by using different kinds of turbos, but you have to build your turbo system for it, and ours is certainly not designed to cover for that lol.

I think everyone knows it’s a heat issue during boost but the question is where is it coming in from.

Yeah I’ve never owned, let alone raced, a turbo car before and I would never have expected it to smell like burning wood mixed with garbage. I’ve smelled a lot of burning automotive substances but never anything like that before. Glad to know it’s apparently normal for the breed.

Does that smell get better with age?

I brought my brand new ST home yesterday from dealer 45 minute interstate drive at 75 mph.
Parked in garage ... Fumes :giggle:, smell of something burning.
I assumed it was just newness being burning off.

It will be gone in about a month or 1000 miles. This is totally normal.

Yeah, it will go away. And congratulations, you finally got yours after couple of days of sleepless nights.

Congrats, Jim! I saw some of your posts the other day. Looks like we both bought our white STs right around the same time!

And, yes, I have the smell, too. But I'd get the same smell when swapping exhausts as well. Just seems typical of all of the engineering that goes into the exhaust components and turbos these days.

Hello, everyone.
I just bought a red 20 ST.
Traveling back the 175 miles from the dealer I found it at interstate speeds. I noticed a burning smell coming from the vents. Stopped halfway to grab a bite and the smell when I opened the door was sickening. It smelled like something had dropped on an exhaust manifold. Looked quickly with a flashlight and couldn’t see any problem. So I drove it on home with the wife’s hand on the passenger door handle ready to make a quick exit. Not a good way to start off with a new car. I drove it a bit yesterday and the smell is not as bad but still there. Hope it leaves soon. Thanks to the forum posts I am not panicked about it.

To continue the story. Took the ST out this morning and only putted around town. After idling a lot the burning smell was terrible again.
I decided to take it to my closest Ford dealer. After putting it up on the rack the tech found the clamp on the driver’s side front axle outer cv joint was missing. This threw grease all over the suspension and front brake. This needed fixed but I am not so sure this is the reason for the smell. The smell and some smoke is worse on the passenger side. They are going to replace the axle so we will see soon.

Wow, what is your build date? This is irresponsible by the Factory, what is happening to the quality control at the assembly plant?

It’s in the shop now. But it is an early one 7/19 I think. Usually I don’t buy the first year of a new model. I really like the ST, but may have screwed up this time.

All the people I know that bought the first ones , had a few glitches , but all were well taken care of , and still very happy with their ST.

So far I am loving my 10/20 build , as I haven't had any issues yet. Only had it a week or so.

Hope you get all issues taken care of .

Picked up the ST yesterday afternoon after the front axle was installed. Only put a few miles on it due to the snowy weather. So far so good. I have noticed the fit of the doors, hood and hatch is better than the 13 I traded in.
Anyone know what issues someone with an early build should expect?

I'm going to assume the axle was a vendor issue. Shipped to Chicago Assembly that way. Still no excuse. When you put hundreds (thousands) of the same part on a vehicle, you should notice something big like a clamp missing.
