I realized I never got around to sharing the baseline dyno numbers for my R&D Explorer, so I wanted to get this video out there for you all.
I only have easy access to a 2WD dyno down the road from my house, which definitely makes dynoing an Explorer a bit of a challenge. You can pull the plug on the transfer case to run it in 2WD (which is what I did), though there's still a bit of drag on the system because it’s a clutch-type transfer case.
The Setup & Numbers:
For this run, the setup was:
Between the upgraded intercooler and the Houston Speed Freaks intake, we picked up about 40 HP. I ran an inlet pressure sensor on the stock airbox and saw a 2.5 PSI pressure drop, whereas the HSF intake has virtually zero restriction (less than 0.1 PSI drop), which really highlights how restrictive the factory box becomes when you start pushing things.
What's Next:
Since this dyno run was completed, the Explorer has already been under the knife. The stock engine and trans are out, and we've swapped in a built motor (10.5:1 compression) along with a built 10R80 transmission from RSA.
We are currently testing some highly anticipated prototype turbos. I'm knee-deep in the R&D process with them right now (working through compressor cover adjustments, wastegate mods, etc.) so they are perfect before release. I'll be sharing the engine/trans swap video and turbo data as soon as we finish dialing them in!
