Has anyone ever added port injection to a 3.0 via Holly Dominator or other ECU’s ? I’ve searched the web but couldn’t find anything. Thank you

No hasn't been done yet, getting the ecu to play nice with port injection add ons isn't ideal by any means, and the holley can't run the engine with vvt and such. We are a long way from having a solution. Right now we can support 600 whp plus on e85 and 800 whp plus on race gas with the current di upgrades. To the get to the point where we are going to go past that is going to require a built motor and a lot of other work. We just aren't there yet.

Appreciate it, I saw your post about the upgrade DI system and that will support my goals. I was just curious about the secondary injection idea.

If you were to “need” secondary injection, the megasquirt (or similar) stand alone is the only viable option.

You could also look at the various methanol injection systems. A heck of a lot easier.

Not necessarily true, I'm working on something. Long ways off though.

Not a fan at all. There are ways to do it, like direct port but I'm not a fan of being dependent on the meth. Single point meth systems always have distribution issues. I'm also not a fan of water meth it has to be straight meth which contributes to the higher failure rate of the meth system.

Also once you get on e85 there is no hp gain from the meth in the small quantities that a meth kit will provide. It's really just charge air cooling at that point. There are gains from charge cooling on the big end of the 1/4 mile but they are not that significant.

I'm not a big fan either, but- if someone is willing to deal with keeping the tank full and can find a good placement of the injector, there's bang for the buck in a pump gas situation. For example, one wouldn't need to upgrade their intercooler (not that I'm a fan of that either). Assuming it's mounted correctly, they can work quite well in a 1:1 water/meth configuration.

Just curious, are there any auxiliary inputs on the Ford ECU one/you (zfg) could access? For example, a switched on/off to adjust timing/boost should the meth tank run dry? Or could you just deal with the change in IAT?

I am having this done currently at Livernois. I’m sure it’s the first one in the country. I don’t have any details on install yet but I guess this would be a good place to start sharing my build. 2F4161FC-AA66-484D-8A72-E3D1E268125B.jpeg

This is literally the first pick they sent me yesterday. I made an account so I can share this build and experiences. I’ll start a build thread as soon as I have more photos and get my explorer back. I have custom turbos, Intercooler, charge pipes, bov, down pipes, cold air intake, high pressure fuel pump, bigger injectors, exhaust, suspension work…. Livernois is doing custom direct port methanol w/ a few different dyno tunes. I’m prolly the one of the few who has blown this motor already also….. even though I’m no mechanic I feel I have a lot of experiences with the explorer that I can offer some and advice and maybe learn some things also.

I live like 20min from LMS and I'd never go back there. With Nostrum's stage 2 kit coming out soon this mod seems expensive and unnecessary. Stage 1 maxes out in the low 500 whp range (turbo limited), and the actual injectors/pump max around 650whp. Stage 2 is going to be at least another 100whp capable.

So are you trying to push higher than that?

I am trying to get into the 700-800 whp. I’m limited to the slow release of new parts and of course the complete unavailability of upgraded internals. I rolled a bearing on pump gas due to leaning out. The dpmi was more of a protection measure for now and future upgrades. I already installed a snow meth injection system and 2.5g tank. LMS didn’t like the setup for reliability. It sprayed before the throttle bottle. I really needed to get it tuned. I was having trouble finding someone who even really
wanted to tune this explorer having already blown the motor and mods they haven’t dealt with before.

Finding this forum maybe I can learn. From my personal research and making a ton of phone calls. LMS were the only ones waiting with open arms and confidence to custom dyno tune my explorer. They recommended this routed because I had the meth kit installed already and said the only way they would tune it is to covert to direct port injection. I’m well over 100k into this truck and no turning back now. I’ll continue to upgrade as they release new parts.

I drove it gently 5k miles untuned to break in the motor. I don’t drive much so this took forever. So after a million calls and a lot of time and really in need of a tune basically LMS was my only choice. The best tuner I know didn’t want to touch it.

What are your "custom" turbos? Has Livernois given you an estimate of max RPM with stock internals- are they upping the rev limit? What fueling are you planning for 700+ HP- E85? My only point is that even with Meth port injection, there are several more things to consider. Sharing with this group might save you a lot of money in reaching your goals.

I’m just wondering if you ever reached out to Adam at ZFG? He’s tuned ST’s with everything you have listed.

Well I already paid for it…..I am happy to be welcomed and even more happy to save money for sure. It’s gonna be e85 and straight meth injection. They haven’t layed out the direct plans for everything but they will be in contact about these things all along the way.

No but I’m willing to have anyone who wants to help/guide/tune/ advise on my truck but livernois have her now and all I can do is share and learn.

Are they doing this all at the same time, or did you have the mods you listed when the engine blew?

Damn…wish you had found this place about a year ago. You would have saved a fortune. Also check out High Performance Explorer ST if you’re on Facebook.
