Other than performance improvements, does a tune provide any other benefits or noticeable changes / improvements?

In the case of the ZFG tune: Auto stop-start elimination. Gear displayed at all times. Transmission tweaks which result in smoother, better shifting under all the drive modes that I've used. The sh!t-eating grin plastered on your face when you press the go pedal. This one may or may not be an improvement, depending on your dental situation.
