305/35/22 vs 315/35/22 tires

I know this has been posted in a couple different threads, but I wanted to make a consolidated one as searching the forum using just tire sizes doesn't return results.

Wheels: 22x10.5", 30 offset

Why is 305/35 generally recommended over 315/35? The 315s appear to be closer to the 30.7" od and fill in the wheel gap just a bit more than 305s. Is 305/35 more widely used purely for esthetics over the 315? Or is there a functional reason as well such as 315s potentially rubbing?

Also, for future forum users searching for tire sizes: 305/40/22 physically fits, but can rub front wheel liners depending on the tire brand. It does look the best though IMO

Because most of them rub if you’re lowered and the cost of a name brand tire is astronomical. My last set of 315/35’s was $2700 plus mount and balance and I got 15K miles out of them. The cost benefit isn’t there. They tramline like crazy and I also had to replace the front fender liners.
A 305/40 will run into the same rubbing issue when lowered on most tires. There’s a few that run narrow that clear but most will rub.
When I did the math on fitment for lowered cars and came up with the 10.5 +30 wheel fitment, the 305/35 was the best compromise between a wide tire and absolutely zero rubbing. It’s become the go-to fitment because of that. If someone doesn’t mind the tire rubbing the other sizes are out there to play with.

Ah OK, I didn't see on other threads about the 315s also potentially rubbing in certain spots.
