2025 B&O Stereo - Factory Sub Amp Used for New Speaker Box! (EASY INSTALL)

I've discovered that the factory sub amp is about 150-200 watts of solid bass with no low frequency roll off
(Ford Explorer ST, B&O 14-speaker system)

I've connected the factory sub amp to a 10" subwoofer in a ported bandpass box, and it sounds phenomenal! HUGE IMPROVEMENT. I estimate that it's about twice as loud and twice as deep, while sounding much cleaner and smoother. For anyone who wants to add some deep and loud bass you can feel in your chest, this is the easiest option. It greatly improves the quality of the overall sound spectrum. The smooth, deep bass compliments the mids and highs so well. And if you want to set the bass higher than -7, the rearview mirror can shake over an inch.

Steps to Add New Subwoofer Box:
1.
Carefully cut around the factory subwoofer grill seam with an "X-acto" knife. Cut on 3 sides so that the grill can be folded out, exposing the factory sub. I left one side attached as a hinge, which is helpful to hold it aligned in place.
DISCLAIMER: The careful cut I made is in the factory seam, so it can ultimately be restored with adhesive in an invisible way. In my opinion, this is a better option than pulling out weather stripping and interior paneling to access the sub, which loosens clips and can even break them (especially if old). Complaints of rattling in panels are common, so I didn't want to create more problems by pulling everything apart. It's also just far easier and less time-consuming to just go through the grill. Again, if done correctly, the grill can simply be glued back in the seam to restore it to original look and function. Please watch YouTube videos of interior panel removal to decide which option you prefer. IF YOU CHOOSE TO PULL OUT THE INTERIOR PANELING INSTEAD, THAT WORKS TOO.
(You may also handle this in a more aesthetically pleasing way... I get it).

2. Remove the factory sub with only 4 screws holding it in place (only the result is shown below)

3. Connect factory sub amp outputs directly to a dual voicecoil subwoofer (4 ohm each coil). It's recommended to use a 10" to 12" sub in a ported box. The subwoofer would be relatively low wattage with a high sensitivity of 90db+ SPL (e.g., JBL Stage 122D).
The ford wiring has purple=positive and black=positive. (NOTE: I've verified all of the output properties with a multimeter, and the results are fantastic).
SEE PHOTOS WITH DESCRIPTIONS BELOW:

NOTE: Even if not adding a separate sub, I highly recommend setting the fade way back to second row headrest to drastically improve overall soundstage in stereo mode. I'll add another thread about optimizing settings for the B&O stereo because the factory defaults are terrible :)....

Hope this helps someone! I enjoy it so much...
It is much louder and cleaner than I would've imagined, with no alteration to electrical wiring.

Wow.
People, don’t cut your car up. You can have the whole side panel off in 10 minutes with no broken clips.
There’s a right way to do things.

False. It's a massive effort to pull apart all of the paneling, and that's far more destructive than what's demonstrated here.
But I've added disclaimers because your concerns are valid. This was thought through and can be restored..

It’s really not. I have mine off frequently as I have several thousand in electronics mounted behind that panel.
Recommending someone cut up a very expensive panel is just a bad idea.

Apologies. It sounds like my threads don't apply to you. I'm obviously making easy and inexpensive mods that simply double the sound quality without any major expenses or rewiring projects.

For anyone interested in pulling apart all the paneling and loosening all of the connections, I recommend watching the YouTube videos online and deciding for yourself. The seam "cut" is obviously invisible and can be repaired in an invisible way. Restoring it involves hidden adhesive, which is no different from how many external pieces are secured to vehicles. It's less damaging than loosening clips and pulling everything apart. I have zero rattles still.. factory tight.

It would be worth it to pull apart the car paneling if installing expensive, aftermarket electronics like you. The point of this thread is that you may not need an expensive project if you just want to add a 200 watt-ish sub that's loud enough to hurt most peoples' ears inside the car (and people standing outside have assumed I have an aftermarket amp). It's surprisingly effective, so I thought I'd share all the info.

If I took my vehicle to a shop and they returned my car looking like this, I would file a lawsuit. Therefore, you writing a "how to" on this is borderline criminal.

I DO appreciate the effort, I miss people doing write ups and good how-to's for forums. I just didn't want/need "How to cut open your speaker grill and do a hack-job subwoofer on your $65K vehicle"

I don't even know anyone that would approach it in this manner. Takes the term backyard technician to a new level.

Yes! I never mentioned taking it to a shop, so that's an interesting argument. This is a thread for adults who can make their own decisions about a very minimal aesthetic in a cargo area, and please let me know how much more fully I can explain the pros and cons above (I've added to the disclaimer). Are you aware that glue is used on the exterior trim panels? But seriously, pull apart all of your panels if you like! Loosen up those plastic clips. Good luck with the weather stripping...

I'm super happy with the result, and it can be 100% restored when finished. It's just awesome to get a 200 watt powered sub so very easily with zero negatives. I bothered my neighbors inside while testing it, so that was a badge of honor. It sounds AMAZING. I'm so happy to bring this knowledge to everyone because I don't think anyone else knew what was possible (judging from the internet). By the way, I did the exact same thing with my 1991 For Explorer Eddie Bauer JBL subwoofer amp.. Right through the grill.. and that was also an awesome result. It's the easiest sub bass anyone will every have. :) My B&O now gets nothing but compliments.

Yup. Think outside the box. It's way too easy, and it's way too easy to restore it to 100% perfect aesthetic and function. Fantastic result unless your personal image is based on the perfection of the cargo area. Mine is usually covered with beach stuff and no one in my life would ever care. Good luck! Let me know if you decide to pull up the weather stripping and loosen all the plastic clips for your rear panels. That might be better.

Most adults would concede that maybe they didn’t make a choice most other adults would for something like this. Then there’s this guy. lol
If you don’t know how to remove interior panels without damaging the clips then yea…maybe this is as good as it gets for you. Rock on.

Or you're probably a child if you think a 100% restorable access point in a cargo area is a big deal to anyone but garage junkies. Please go spend more money on your old Explorer.

I highly doubt that. lol
I didn’t do hack job installs on my other mods either.

Yeah. Just the basic front end and rear styling are far superior in the newer models (just needed to better hide the mufflers, but that's been corrected). But yeah, that's why I waited until the Explorers were decent looking again to buy one. Also, it drives itself on the expressway :) Life is good. Enjoy killing your ears with a resale nightmare. Mine will look completely new with a 10-minute project. How about yours? I'm sure a teenager will love it.

I love these… Popcorn time so much fun. OG’s toying with children. It’s a beautiful thing… remind me of The Bear Pit.
