Good luck! Found out mine's still not complete due to some snafu with the title transfer so I technically own, or am making payments on, two STs until Ford resolves it. I keep seeing a Telluride in my neighborhood and they're certainly eye-catching. Have you looked at one?
Interesting about the Telluride. We actually came very close to getting one before the ST caught our attention.

Speaking if making two payments, we wound up buying a 2018 Explorer Platinum. 29K miles and fully loaded, except the headrest screens for $35K. The suspension is a little soft, but that can be fixed with some goodies from Steeda, plus the twin turbo 3.5 liter can be improved with an ECM tune.

Our dealer has been so great through all of this. They have gone above and beyond to help us out, and we will continue to give them our business for sure.

Happy to report that our buyback is now complete. A total of 19 weeks and 3 days since it went into the shop for “repairs, ‘ and a total of 21 weeks spent in the shop.

I got some great news this morning. The BBB called to say Ford has agreed to buyback my ST. The bad news is they said it can take up to 120 days due to the covid virus to complete the process. Fingers crossed it does not take that long.

Our buyback took ten weeks from the time that it was approved until the actual papers were signed. The loan payoff check is being delivered via FedEx today to my credit union, so call it 11 weeks from the time it was approved until it was paid off.

For us, it took a little over 20 weeks from the time we requested the buyback until the loan was paid off. Hope that puts things in perspective for you.

On another note, of the 30 people that have taken my survey, 20% have needed a buyback. While not statistically significant, it is still quite a large number for our community. One reason the buyback number is so high could be that people found the forum looking for answers related to the issues they are having, but I can't help but wonder if Ford is struggling with their 6th generation Explorer's quality control.

That is very helpful information. I was discussing the number of buybacks with my wife last night also and it is a little unsettling. I also agree with you on the quality control aspect because it seems like there are real issues. This is by far the worst vehicle I have purchased as far as I can remember. I was also curious if Ford had any surveys or conversations with you or maybe they tried to talk you into buying another of their products? Thanks for your info also.

Happy to help. It’s been a process to say the least. Despite everything we went through, we were still sad the day we signed the buyback papers and cleaned out the vehicle. We had literally not laid eyes on it since February 15, but it still looked as awesome as the day we bought it.

Ford sent a survey a few days before we actually signed the papers, but I waited until after everything was said and done to complete it, as I wanted to see how the dealership experience went. Our dealer has gone above and beyond to try and make things right - we could tell it really pained them to have our sale end up this way, but we’ve been doing business with them for almost 15 years so our relationship is solid.

I forgot to mention that I reported the safety issues I was having with the powertrain to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), so they can keep a record of the problems and issue a recall if there is enough data to warrant one.

Here's the link, in case anyone else needs to file a report: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/

It only takes about 5 minutes to complete, and you can even upload photos of the warning lights if you have them.

I just perused this post to find where to start to initiate the buyback process.

You just go to the dealer? Who specifically at the dealer?

I called the Ford Customer Service line and got a Case Number through them. Should I just await to get a call back from the Case Manager and forgo the dealership?

Your best bet is to wait for a call back from the case manager. It may take a little while, but they’ll get back to you for the next steps. It’s out of the dealership’s hands now.

I’m currently leasing my ST and it’s been in the shop over 3 weeks. Talked with the service manager and told me a buyback may happen. They don’t know how to fix my driver seat chair as it’s some bug in the computer and Ford doesn’t know how to fix it. How does the buyback work with a lease?

We've had issue with our seat also stuck in the very back position now after taking it in to fix it because the easy exit was going in wrong direction and would about crush me into steering wheel. Our dealer at least gave us a Platinum loaner. Which is ok but not the ST!

A lease buyback should be the same as a vehicle that is financed via a loan. The trick is knowing what your state‘s lemon law(s) are, then reminding the dealer of the law(s). Here’s a link for California’s lemon law for you: https://www.dca.ca.gov/acp/pdf_files/englemn.pdf

Call Ford Customer Service at 800-392-3673 and ask them to open a case. Tell them it’s a safety issue and that you are not comfortable driving it as it has the potential for serious injury and perhaps death.

Glad to hear you got approved. Are you exchanging or looking at a different vehicle?

Dont’t forget to update your vote in the poll above!

Already updated, and I think we are going to get reimbursed and then wait for the '21s to come out.

My wife and I can't decide on anything else, we both love the new Explorers, just not the problems associated with it. Hopefully Ford will get their sh*t straight for the next rollout.

Not a bad idea to wait. 2021 are less expensive than the 2020s, plus they will hopefully get the problems straightened out by then.

Ford gave us a discount code to use towards the purchase of any new Ford. I think the discount was $1,500 and had to be used within 30 days of the buyback.
