I went to put my 21's back on for the summer. Jacked up one front tire off the ground and I could rotate the tire with the other three on the ground ?? The front driveshaft rotates freely in the transfer case. Does anyone have the facts on how this transfer case operates technically? Conventional AWD with a center differential will not allow you to do this. I speculate that this must be a planetary arrangement in the transfer case with the planet carrier controlled electrically or hydraulically through a clutch or motor to drive the front driveshaft as needed.

from my understanding, its primarily a RWD vehicle until the computer determines it needs AWD to maintain grip. so its kind of like an automatic transfer case that turns on and off when needed.

try this: go find a hard hairpin and gun it (obviously within safe and reasonable control). youll feel the front grab.

Kevin is correct. It's not a true 50/50 AWD system, where it's on 100% of the time. Until the front senses slip, it's RWD-biased.
