Gas splash back when refueling?

Ive searched this and other sites for an issue I’m having my 2021 ST where while refueling it splashes back and drenches me every time? It’s currently back at the dealer and so far they’ve dropped the tank and inspected the filler neck and the various valves and vent lines and found no issue. This happened a couple time when I first bought it but has gotten worse as time has gone by. The dealer has a call out to Ford to see what they suggest.

Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas or suggestions?

Only issue I've had is at my local gas station and a few others I have to either position the handle just right or literally hold it upside down in order for it to not trigger as "full" and have the handle shut off... so my guess is the filler necks design to begin causes this and maybe yours is just slightly worse?

No idea otherwise

Hard to tell. Several of our work trucks with service bodies have this issue and I’ve tried to manipulate the handle and speed the nozzle feeds the fuel with no change. The dealership field it and videod the splash back. It’s funny how two other Explorers on the lot don’t have that issue?

Supposedly there is a second bypass valve in the neck hence the white fill tube thats needed to fill the tank when you run out.. maybe an issue with that? Even though they did inspect everything.

No issue with either Ford that I own . I never "top off" once the pump shuts off though.

Don't do warp speed filing do the first click. Our Taurus and Explorer interceptors are notorious for splash back if you more than one click at our pumps.

I always fill slow and never round up or top but when this started an advisor asked the question so I tried it fast, slow, by my hand, upside down, nozzle cranked at 7, 5, straight up, as far in as possible, half out, you name it. The problem isn’t with it shutting off, the problem is several moments after it shuts off it comes flying back out with velocity. Doesn’t sound like anyone else has seen this.

Update: Dealer removed EVAP vent line And tried to fuel and after 2-3 gallons they got an explosive backsplash. Ordered and are replacing gas tank filler neck.

Update #2: Filler neck replaced and splashback has now turned into an almost eruption that’s coming after the nozzle is removed by a few seconds and is significantly more than just a few ounces. They are now ordering a new gas tank but they are on Back Order until end of August. The saga continues.

IMO your dealer is not diagnosing this problem correctly. A build up of pressure like that has to be in the evap system, not the fuel neck or tank. I'm assuming it's not throwing any codes for the purge solenoid or tank pressure sensor. I'd be looking for a kink in the line from the tank to the charcoal cannister, a flaw in the cannister itself, or a problem in the CVS- cannister vent solenoid. Way out of the way, is really bad (high vapor) gas going in on an incredibly hot day. Could also be the pump you're using (are you using different ones?) is just outputting a lot of volume, or is impeding the vapor recirculation tube, or that tube is pinched somehow. I'd assume they replaced the recirculation tube when they changed the filler neck. Just my 2 cents.

The list of parts replaced to this point is exhaustive, to my knowledge every vent line, every pressure sensor and all of the EVAP system components and the filler neck have been replaced. Multiple refuels have been done while all of the sensors were being monitored by whatever Ford diagnostic tool they are using. All of the sensor voltages were relayed to Ford engineering and so far all are normal and no codes have appeared. From what I know of vehicle fuel systems the tank is all that’s left?

This problem began shortly after purchase and has progressively gotten worse with the ultimate insult happening on my way to a funeral that left me soaked and smelling like a gas pump. This was in another state so the pump used isn’t the culprit.

I appreciate all of the inputs from anyone and everyone. I am confident this will get fixed and resolved since the GM at the dealership is family and he has done everything in his control to get this thing fixed.

After waiting several weeks for a new tank and various other parts, all are now in and ST is back at the dealership. Fingers crossed..

Final update.
Gas tank was replaced as well as one vent line that was damaged and so far no issues refueling. So glad. Time to get back to enjoying the ST.

I have not experienced any splash back on by 2021 ST but I do have to hold the trigger half way to avoid it shutting the pump off repeatedly. The shop foreman believes it is the "rollover flap" not opening fully inside the tank cashing gas to back up the filler neck. He ordered a new gas tank and it will be replaced next week. I hope this solves my issue!

I have the same issue. I saw somewhere someone posted that if you turn the trigger sideways to the left towards the gas cap lid it helps so I've been trying that and it seems to work for me.

Just got my ST back from the dealer after a week for this issue. After replacing the tank and filler neck with no improvement, it was determined that the hose connecting the filler neck to the tank was damaged due to overspray from the Ziebart undercoating! Because the undercoating is applied hot it melted and warped the hose, restricting flow, causing fuel to back up the filler neck and shut off the pump. That piece was replaced and now operates as designed.

All of the vent lines on mine were replaced the first time it went in and it seemed to work for a few fills and the came back like a volcano. When the original tank was dropped the Tech identified a flap type valve that was damaged and not operating is what I was told when I picked it up. Still no issues at all with the new tank.

Having a smilier issue. No violent splash back, but pump shuts off every 10 seconds. I'll try to turn it more sideways to see if I can get it to fill. Of all the little quirks, this one really pisses me off. Nothing like wrestling a gas pump like an idiot in the morning.

I had a similar issue where the pump would keep clicking off during fill up. It was actually a software update for some valve that fixed it for me. Never did I think that would be a software update!
