What are these two compartments designed to hold?

First pic...in the center console. I think it may to hold the key fob? Or maybe an extra key fob?

second pic...in front of the two cup holders. I think it is to hold a cell phone. BUT, why is there an indention in the bottom of the compartment. It makes the phone lean to one side.

what does the forum say?

The Center console Key Fob holder comes in handy when you park near certain locations that overwhelm the signals from the fob to the car. I have two spots here in my home town that if I shut the ST off, I get a dash warning to restart immediately or I'll have to put the key in that slot..... The one in front of the cup holder holds my garage door opener just fine.....the integrated Ford visor garage door opener doesn't work with my antique garage door opener.

The one in the console is for your key fob. You put it there if your battery is dead and you can start the Explorer.

I usually plug my iphone into the USB port in the compartment in front of the cup
Holders. Then place the phone upside down in that first slot in front of the cup holders. But it flops over sideways. So I figure I’m not doing it right!!?! Haha

We keep our keys in the center console key fob holder all the time. You don't really need to take them out if you use the number pad or your phone.

Yeah, if the slot in front of cup holder is not for key fob, it seemingly should have some other specific function. Its design is so unique that there must have been a plan in mind. Wonder what it was??

I can only assume it was to hold a phone due to no wireless Android Auto or Car Play. Unfortunately if this is true everyone at Ford has a small phone... It has a rubber mat for easy cleaning. I have not left the house in a while but can anyone verify if it will hold fries or a hash brown (preferably a few if the answer is yes)?

same size issue as the 'phone holder' with the Qi charging pad, the pad is too small for any current large screen phone. also I think it is a stupid place to locate the Qi charger as you would need to string the cable across the console. Ford is kinda 'hit and miss' with the ergonomics stuff IMHO. Some features are really cool, then you have the duds like these.. There doesn't appear to be a wholistic approach, more like a number of product teams working on individual features..
